Judaism has one of the most developed defamation laws in religious history. Motzi shem ra (bringing out an evil name) is the deliberate spread of damaging falsehood, and even accurate but harmful speech is lashon hara. The Chafetz Chaim's classic code counts 'one who tells others what he heard, even truth' among violators — a fabricated video is far worse. Layered onto this is geneivat da'at: the viewers' minds are also stolen, since they are made to believe something false. Halakhic authorities have already ruled that sharing unverified harmful content violates these laws even if the sharer 'was only passing it along.' The tradition's default is silence: 'I have kept silence as one dead' (Psalm 38:13-14).

Repentance: Teshuvah
The Talmud teaches that teshuvah was created before the world itself — Hashem believed in your return before you were born. The gates of return are open now.

Is watching a deepfake a sin, or only making one?
Knowingly watching and spreading deepfakes, especially intimate ones, is condemned.
Knowingly watching and spreading deepfakes, especially intimate ones, is condemned. Judaism counts hearing lashon hara alongside speaking it.
What if the deepfake is obviously labeled satire?
Clearly labeled parody is less serious than deception, because no false impression is created.
Clearly labeled parody is less serious than deception, because no false impression is created. Jewish law permits satire only when no real person is degraded.
Can deepfakes ever be used for good, like in movies?
Yes — consent is the dividing line.
Yes — consent is the dividing line. Studios contract actors and label fiction, which involves no false witness. All three traditions distinguish consensual creative use from non-consensual fabrication. The sin lies in deception and harm, not the technology.
