How to Do Teshuvah

The gates of teshuvah are always open — but we do not know how much time we have.

Repentance: Teshuvah by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz

Before you begin teshuvah

The Talmud says even the righteous cannot stand where a ba'al teshuvah stands.

Rabbi Steinsaltz lays out the complete path of teshuvah — the exact process Judaism gives you to return. This book is the map home. Don't walk into teshuvah blind.

When God Seems Distant

Feeling far from God after sinning is natural — but it is a feeling, not reality. The Psalmist knew this struggle:

"Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there."

— Psalm 139:7-8

The Talmud teaches that even when you feel most distant, the Holy One, blessed be He, extends His hand to receive you. Teshuvah is the proof that the connection was never truly broken.

Preparing for the High Holy Days

The month of Elul is the traditional season for cheshbon hanefesh — an accounting of the soul. Use this checklist:

  • Review the past year honestly — where did you fall short?
  • Contact anyone you may have harmed and ask forgiveness
  • Increase tzedakah (charitable giving)
  • Recite Psalm 27 daily during Elul
  • Blow the shofar — let it wake your soul
  • On Yom Kippur, complete the vidui with the community
