Is Gambling Haram?
Gambling (maysir) is explicitly forbidden in the Quran. It is classified as haram by all major schools of Islamic jurisprudence.
Is Drinking Alcohol Haram?
All alcoholic beverages are haram. The Quran prohibits khamr (intoxicants) completely. This includes beer, wine, spirits, and any substance that intoxicates.
Is Getting a Tattoo Haram?
Most Islamic scholars consider permanent tattoos haram because they involve changing Allah's creation. Some modern scholars debate this for medical or temporary tattoos.
Is Masturbation Haram?
Most Islamic scholars consider masturbation haram or at minimum makruh (disliked). Some scholars permit it only as a last resort to avoid zina (fornication).
Is Pornography Haram?
Pornography is haram in Islam. It violates the commandment to lower one's gaze (Quran 24:30-31) and is considered a form of zina (sexual immorality) of the eyes.
Is Smoking and Vaping Haram?
Most Islamic scholars classify smoking as haram (forbidden) because it causes self-harm, which is prohibited in Islam. Vaping is treated the same. Some scholars consider it makruh (disliked) but the dominant modern ruling is haram.
Is Cursing and Swearing Haram?
Islam explicitly prohibits foul language, insults, and cursing. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said a true Muslim is one from whose tongue and hands others are safe. Profanity is classified as haram.
Is Premarital Sex Haram?
Islam strictly prohibits zina (fornication/adultery) as one of the gravest sins. Premarital sex is haram with no exceptions. Islamic law historically prescribed severe punishments, reflecting its seriousness.
Is Suicide Haram?
Islam prohibits suicide as a grave sin, teaching that life is a trust from Allah. However, scholars recognize that mental illness may diminish accountability. Allah's mercy encompasses all things.
Is Yoga Haram?
Most Islamic scholars discourage yoga due to its roots in Hindu spiritual practice, which includes elements of shirk (associating partners with Allah). However, purely physical stretching without chanting or spiritual intent is viewed more leniently by some.
Is Lying and Deceit Haram?
Lying (kidhb) is one of the most serious sins in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad said truthfulness leads to righteousness and Paradise, while lying leads to wickedness and Hell. Lying is especially grave when it harms others, in legal testimony, or about religious matters.
Is Stealing and Theft Haram?
Theft (sariqa) is a major sin in Islam with prescribed punishments (hudud). The Quran specifies amputation of the hand for proven theft under strict conditions. Islam also prohibits all forms of taking others' property through fraud, deception, or bribery.
Is Anger and Wrath Haram?
Islam strongly condemns uncontrolled anger. The Prophet Muhammad said the strong person is not the one who can overpower others but the one who controls himself when angry. Suppressing anger is listed among the qualities of the righteous in the Quran.
Is Greed and Materialism Haram?
Islam permits earning wealth but strictly prohibits greed, hoarding, and materialism. The Quran warns that on the Day of Judgment, every person will be questioned about how they earned and spent their wealth. Zakat (obligatory charity) is one of the Five Pillars specifically designed to combat greed.
Is Lust Haram?
Islam prohibits lustful looking (ghudd al-basar) and commands believers to lower their gaze and guard their modesty. Lust outside of marriage is considered a pathway to zina (fornication/adultery), which is a grave sin. Marriage is presented as the solution for channeling sexual desire appropriately.
Is Divorce Haram?
Divorce (talaq) is permitted in Islam but strongly discouraged. The Prophet Muhammad said it is 'the most hated of permissible things in the sight of Allah.' Islam provides detailed procedures for divorce, including a waiting period (iddah) and attempts at reconciliation.
Is Skipping Prayer and Worship Haram?
Salah (the five daily prayers) is the second pillar of Islam and one of the most fundamental obligations. Neglecting prayer out of laziness is a major sin. Some scholars consider deliberately abandoning prayer entirely as an act of disbelief (kufr). The distinction is between missing prayers out of weakness (sinful) vs. denying the obligation entirely (disbelief).
Is Gluttony and Overeating Haram?
Islam teaches moderation in all things, including eating. The Quran and Sunnah emphasize eating to live, not living to eat. Overeating is considered wasteful and a sign of ingratitude for Allah's provision. The Prophet recommended filling the stomach with one-third food, one-third water, and one-third air.
Is Pride and Arrogance Haram?
Arrogance (kibr) is one of the gravest sins in Islam. Iblis (Satan) was cast out of Paradise because he refused to bow to Adam out of pride. The Prophet Muhammad said that no one with an atom's weight of pride in their heart will enter Paradise.
Is Abortion Haram?
Islam prohibits elective abortion but permits it in specific circumstances. Most scholars allow abortion before 120 days (when ensoulment is believed to occur) for serious reasons. After 120 days, abortion is only permitted to save the mother's life. The consensus is that abortion without valid reason is haram.
Is Cheating (Infidelity) Haram?
Adultery (zina) is explicitly prohibited in the Quran and is classified as a major sin (kabirah). It carries severe consequences in Islamic law and is considered one of the most destructive acts.
Is Cremation Haram?
Cremation is strictly forbidden (haram) in Islam. Islamic law requires burial of the intact body as practiced by the Prophet Muhammad. Cremation is considered a violation of the dignity of the human body.
Is Killing in Self-Defense Haram?
Islam permits killing in self-defense to protect one's life, family, or community. The Quran affirms the right to defend against aggression while prohibiting murder.
Is Not Going to Church or Worship Haram?
Missing Friday congregational prayer (Jumu'ah) is considered sinful for Muslim men. The Quran and hadith emphasize its importance. Women are exempt from the obligation but may attend.
Is Homosexuality Haram?
Mainstream Islamic scholarship considers same-sex sexual acts haram (forbidden) based on the Quran's account of Lot and scholarly consensus. Some progressive Muslim voices are re-examining these interpretations.
Is Dating a Non-Believer Haram?
Islam has gender-differentiated rules. Muslim men may marry Christian or Jewish women (People of the Book), but Muslim women are prohibited from marrying non-Muslim men. Dating itself is a Western concept not traditionally practiced in Islamic cultures.
Is Meditation Haram?
Islam encourages meditation (tadabbur) on the Quran and reflection on Allahs creation. The Prophet Muhammad meditated in the cave of Hira before receiving revelation. However, meditation practices borrowed from other religions may be considered bidah (innovation) or shirk if they involve invoking other deities.
Is Working on the Sabbath Haram?
Islam does not have a Sabbath. Friday is the day of congregational prayer (Jumuah), and Muslims are encouraged to attend but working before and after prayer is permitted. There is no prohibition on working any day of the week.
Is Having Doubts About Faith Haram?
Islam distinguishes between waswas (whispers of doubt from Shaytan, which are not sinful if resisted), legitimate questions seeking understanding, and kufr (willful rejection of faith after receiving the message). Only the latter is sinful. Honest questioning is encouraged as a path to stronger iman (faith).
Is Being Jealous Haram?
Islam explicitly forbids hasad (malicious envy — wishing for blessings to be removed from someone). The Prophet Muhammad said envy destroys good deeds as fire destroys wood. However, ghibtah (admiring someones blessing without wishing it removed) is permitted and can motivate self-improvement.
Is Not Tithing Haram?
Zakat (almsgiving of 2.5% of accumulated wealth annually) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is not optional — it is a mandatory religious obligation. Neglecting zakat without valid reason is considered a major sin. It is distinct from sadaqah (voluntary charity).
Is Listening to Secular Music Haram?
Islamic opinion on music varies. The majority of scholars permit music that does not contain sinful content. A minority, particularly Salafi scholars, consider music haram based on certain hadith. The Quran does not explicitly forbid music. Nasheed (vocals without instruments) is widely accepted.
Is Wishing Someone Dead Haram?
Islam forbids wishing death on anyone, even enemies. The Prophet Muhammad taught that a Muslim should never pray for death — not for oneself and not for others. Even in warfare, desiring personal vengeance is discouraged.
Is Vaping Haram?
Most Islamic scholars classify vaping as haram (forbidden) by analogy (qiyas) to smoking. The principles applied are: prohibition of self-harm, prohibition of intoxicants and addictive substances, and the waste of wealth on harmful things.
Is Forgetting to Pray Haram?
Islam distinguishes between forgetting prayer (not sinful, as the Prophet said whoever forgets should pray when they remember) and deliberately missing prayer (which is a major sin). The five daily prayers are obligatory but Allah forgives honest forgetfulness.
Is Plastic Surgery Haram?
Islam permits plastic surgery for genuine medical need such as reconstruction after accidents. Purely cosmetic procedures that alter Allah's creation without necessity are discouraged by most scholars.
Is Artificial Intelligence Haram?
Islam treats AI as a tool whose morality depends on use. AI for knowledge and problem-solving is permitted. Using AI to deceive or cause harm would be sinful.
Is Gene Editing Haram?
Gene editing to cure disease is permitted under Islamic medical ethics. Enhancement editing that alters Allah's creation without necessity is controversial.
Is Cryptocurrency Investing Haram?
Islamic scholars are divided. Some consider crypto haram due to gharar (excessive uncertainty) and lack of intrinsic value. Others treat it as legitimate trade. The majority view is evolving.
Is Fortune Telling Haram?
Islam strictly forbids fortune telling (sihr). Visiting a fortune teller is considered a major sin, and the Prophet Muhammad stated that prayer is not accepted for 40 days from one who visits a fortune teller.
Is Horoscopes Haram?
Islam forbids believing in horoscopes as a form of astrology and divination. The Prophet Muhammad explicitly rejected astrology. Casual reading without belief is still discouraged.
Is Fasting Haram?
Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is obligatory for all able adult Muslims. Missing Ramadan fasts without valid reason is a serious sin. Voluntary fasting on other days is highly meritorious.
Is Acupuncture Haram?
Acupuncture is widely accepted in the Islamic world as a medical treatment. Some scholars note it resembles the Sunnah practice of hijama (cupping). As long as no shirk (idolatry) is involved, it is permitted.
Is Hypnosis Haram?
Medical hypnosis is debated. Some scholars permit it for therapy under a qualified practitioner. Others are concerned about the altered state of consciousness and potential for spiritual harm.
Is Energy Healing Haram?
Energy healing that involves spiritual elements from non-Islamic traditions is controversial. Some scholars consider it haram if it involves beliefs incompatible with tawhid (oneness of God). Physical relaxation alone is more accepted.
