Jewish labor law is famously employee-protective — the Talmud holds that even the poorest hired worker retains the standing of a free person and may resign, with the law then calculating fair compensation for work done (Bava Metzia 77a, 10a). So there is no halakhic chain keeping a worker in a job. But the tradition immediately adds ethics to rights: 'let all your deeds be for the sake of Heaven' (Avot 2:1) and the standing rule of derech eretz — decent, considerate conduct — which includes not stranding colleagues and clients. Ecclesiastes 5:4's counsel about vows reads onto agreed notice: having committed, deliver. There is also a specifically Jewish professional teaching: 'Who is wise? He who sees the consequences' (Avot 2:9(?) — attributed to the sages) — industries are small, reputations are long, and the bridge you burn may be the one you re-cross. Poskim note the modern wrinkle of at-will employment: where no notice is promised, none is owed as contract — but the ways of peace (darkhei shalom) still counsel the courtesy, especially where a team depends on you.

- Check your contract's notice terms before you resign — if you promised notice, plan to give it.
- Leave a transition note for whoever inherits your work; it is the cheapest kindness in corporate life.
- Jewish: You are free to resign, but derech eretz and darkhei shalom call for notice, handover, and a clean ending.
- All: If you already left abruptly and it harmed your team, a brief apology note to your old manager repairs more than you expect.
Repentance: Teshuvah
The Talmud teaches that teshuvah was created before the world itself — Hashem believed in your return before you were born. The gates of return are open now.

Do I owe notice if I'm at-will and nothing was signed?
Legally often no; morally, the traditions still counsel courtesy; two weeks remains the honest default where roles overlap.

What if the job is toxic or abusive?
The traditions widen exit rights when the workplace is unjust: immediate exit is permitted where continuing means harm, and no tradition requires fidelity to abuse.

Is it a sin to quit during a busy season?
Timing is part of manner rather than the act itself.
Timing is part of manner rather than the act itself. All three traditions weigh the burden your exit places on colleagues and clients. Where the contract allows it, quitting is permitted — but planning a gentler landing is praised as the ways of peace and honorable conduct.
