Judaism has institutionalized passive income since before the common era: the hekdesh (temple endowment) and later communal funds are rabbinic inventions, and the Talmud discusses annuities, rents, and business partnerships with a practitioner's fluency. Halakhically, rental income and partnership profits raise no problem — ribbit rules govern loans, not ownership. The Jewish ethical tradition then asks the interesting question: what will you do with the time? Avot 2:2 — 'all Torah without work ends in nothing' — pairs study with occupation; the rabbis honored wealthy scholars who worked and criticized the idle rich. The classic line is attributed to various sages: rich or poor, 'look at the sky' — the same Accountant awaits. Tzedakah structures the obligation: even the recipient of tzedakah must give tzedakah, and percentage giving scales with wealth — passive income does not pause the duties. The Jewish ideal for financial freedom is captured in the blessing over prosperity: to use it for Torah, family, and kindness — the money may sleep, in other words, but the person may not.

Ce que vous devriez faire

  • Treat passive income as freed capacity: fund generosity, family, and purpose before lifestyle inflation.
  • Keep earning or serving in some form — structure is permitted; sloth is the target of the tradition's warning.
  • Jewish: Pair your resources with Torah and deeds (Avot 2:2); scale tzedakah as income scales.
  • All: Review yearly: what did the passive income build besides the balance?
Repentance: Teshuvah

Repentance: Teshuvah

The Talmud teaches that teshuvah was created before the world itself — Hashem believed in your return before you were born. The gates of return are open now.

Is it wrong to retire and live off investments?

No — traditions treat provision for old age as wise, not sinful; the warnings concern idleness and hoarding, not retirement itself.

Doesn't passive income violate 'by the sweat of your brow'?

The traditions read that verse as describing the human condition, not a universal law for every dollar.
