Judaism may have the most direct ruling available: a Talmudic guarantee. 'Since the day the Temple was destroyed, the gates of prayer are locked... yet the though the gates of tears are never closed' (Berakhot 32b) — tears, the tradition teaches, reach where words are blocked. The proof-texts are the tradition's own heroes: Hannah, weeping bitterly at Shiloh, her lips moving without voice — the Talmud derives multiple laws of prayer from that scene, and God answers her; the pilgrim Psalms of ascent (sung to the Temple, 'those who sow in tears shall reap with joy' — 126:5); and the High Holiday liturgy, whose entire architecture — the Book of Life, the King's nearness, 'our Father, our King' — is engineered to move the weeping that the tradition calls teshuvah's companion. The Hasidic masters added the interior doctrine: Rebbe Nachman taught that there are gates that only tears open, and the Kotzker's aphorism insists that 'there is nothing as whole as a broken heart.' The Jewish cautions: tears of despair ('God has forsaken me') contradict the faith being prayed; and public weeping for display is vanity. But the shul where nobody ever cries, the tradition quietly suggests, may not be praying.

L'analyse détaillée ci-dessous est proposée en anglais.
- If tears come in worship, let them — you are in the Psalms' and the Prophet's company.
- If they never come, do not perform them; worship in dryness is still worship.
- Jewish: Trust the guarantee — the gates of tears are never closed (Berakhot 32b).
- All: If tears are grief rather than devotion, let the community in — pastors, imams, and rabbis are for exactly that.
Repentance: Teshuvah
The Talmud teaches that teshuvah was created before the world itself — Hashem believed in your return before you were born. The gates of return are open now.

Is crying during prayer a sign of weakness or holiness?
The traditions answer with one voice: neither weakness nor automatic holiness — it is simply the heart's overflow, praised when it flows from awe, repentance, or love.

What if I feel nothing in worship?
Dryness is a standard chapter in every tradition's spiritual literature.
Dryness is a standard chapter in every tradition's spiritual literature. Faithfulness in dryness is often rated above consolation in fervor. Keep the practice; talk with a spiritual director; the tears return.
Is emotional worship manipulative?
It can be — when engineered for display or proof of spirituality.
