Islam places extraordinary emphasis on truthfulness. Lying (kidhb) is considered among the most destructive of character flaws. The Prophet Muhammad was known as Al-Amin (The Trustworthy) even before receiving revelation. Islamic scholars classify lies by severity: lying about Allah or the religion is among the gravest possible sins; lying in legal testimony is a major sin; lying to harm another person is also grave. Even minor social lying (such as saying you will do something you have no intention of doing) is discouraged. The one accepted exception is lying to reconcile two disputing parties.

- Acknowledge the truth to yourself first — self-deception is often the root of lying to others.
- Muslim: Make tawbah — stop lying, regret the lies, and resolve to speak only truth. The Prophet said: 'Adhere to truth, for truth leads to good works and good works lead to Paradise.'
- If lying has become habitual, consider speaking with a religious leader or counselor about building a habit of truthfulness.
Book of Repentance (Sahih Muslim)
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said Allah rejoices more when you return than a man who finds water in the desert. Islamic tradition holds that tawbah is always accepted for those who sincerely seek it.
