Islam built a jurisprudence of privacy long before the internet. The Quran forbids spying and backbiting (49:12), compares entering another's house without permission to violation (24:27-29), and even protects the interior of homes from prying eyes. From these texts scholars derive that collecting or publishing private information to harm someone is haram — even if the target genuinely sinned. The principle of commanding right and forbidding wrong has channels: accusations go to authorities or trustworthy mediators, not to a mob. Islam also takes the spread of harm seriously: the Prophet taught that whoever spreads a fault shares its burden. A doxer cannot claim cleanliness because someone else sent the threats; the exposure was the mechanism of the harm. Even verification does not save the act: 'Do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge' (17:36), and with knowledge, the duty is ihsan — excellence in dealing with people.

Ce que vous devriez faire

L'analyse détaillée ci-dessous est proposée en anglais.

  • Never publish a person's private details — address, workplace, ID — to pressure or punish them; that is mob violence by proxy.
  • If you see a dox posted, do not share or screenshot it further; report it to the platform.
  • Muslim: Remember that spying and exposing are forbidden (Quran 49:12); report genuine wrongdoing through proper channels, not public exposure.
  • All: If you have been doxed, contact platforms and law enforcement, and ask trusted people to help document the abuse.

Genuine crimes belong with police, regulators, or journalists who verify — that is process, not doxing; the difference is verification and consequence management.

What if the information I shared was already public?

Aggregating scattered details into a target package is still exposure; the harm comes from the directing of attention, not the raw data.

I was doxed and I am scared — what does my faith say?

All three traditions affirm that you are the wronged party and that God defends the vulnerable; practically: document everything, report, and do not face it alone.
