Christian Denominations: How They Differ on Celebrating Birthdays
Catholic Church
Celebration with gratitude is good; sinful excess — vanity, envy, drunkenness — is the sin, not the observance.
Catechism of the Catholic Church
Protestant Churches
Protestants celebrate birthdays without controversy (a few historical groups, like the early Watchtower, dissented); the teaching aims at materialism.
Holy Bible (Protestant canon)
Eastern Orthodox
Orthodox tradition marks name-days and birthdays with blessing; excess is counseled against.

Christianity's birthday-objection is mostly a Protestant-history footnote: a few rigorist groups (the old Puritans called them pagan; the early Bible Students dropped them) argued from the bad birthday parties of scripture — Pharaoh's (Genesis 40, baker hanged) and Herod's (Matthew 14, John beheaded) — an argument by association the mainstream never found persuasive: the Bible's problem is Pharaoh and Herod, not the cake. The tradition's affirmative record is long: Job's children's feasts 'each on his day' (Job 1:4) read as ordinary blessed celebration; the Church built its calendar on birthdays — John the Baptist's (June 24, announced by an angel), Mary's (September 8, kept for fifteen centuries), and the Lord's own — and the name-day customs of Europe made the calendar a birthday party. Christian guidance today is gratitude-shaped: the day belongs to the Giver (Psalm 139's 'fearfully and wonderfully made'), celebration is commanded joy (Philippians 4:4), and the sins are the adjacent ones — the vanity-cake of a midlife crisis, children's party envy, the social-media birthday performance. The tradition's best practice might be the oldest: on your birthday, thank God for your parents — the day is theirs too.
