Christianity's default position on investing is surprisingly positive. Jesus' parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) actually condemns the servant who buried the money instead of investing it — the master expected a return and called the non-investor 'wicked and slothful.' Add Proverbs' praise of the ant who stores provisions (6:6-8), Paul's charge that a person who fails to provide for his household has 'denied the faith' (1 Timothy 5:8), and the picture is clear: prudent accumulation for real responsibilities is a Christian duty, not a compromise. Index funds fit this picture well because they are the diversified, low-churn, humble version of investing — Ecclesiastes 11:2's advice to divide your portion seven or eight ways is essentially an index fund pitch. The tradition's warnings aim elsewhere: 'where your treasure is, there your heart will be also' (Matthew 6:21), the impossibility of serving God and mammon (6:24), and the rich fool who stored wealth but was 'not rich toward God' (Luke 12:21).

Ce que vous devriez faire

  • Automate regular investing — steady provision beats speculation (Proverbs 21:5).
  • Give first: set a fixed percentage for charity before the market moves your mood.
  • Christian: Hold wealth loosely — 'where your treasure is, there your heart will be also' (Matthew 6:21); let generosity prove the looseness.
  • All: Never invest money you cannot leave alone — anxiety-driven decisions damage both returns and souls.
